I'm Josh Thompson. I'm a comedian. The people around me started telling me to run for mayor of Toronto. I thought they were doing a bit. They weren't. I filed.
I live here. I walk out the door and I can feel it. People look tired. The street doesn't feel like it belongs to the people paying for it. Everybody's a little braced, like they're waiting for the next thing to go wrong.
I believe you only get a chance if you take one, and if you try your BEST God will help you do the rest. I'm not going to hand you a twenty-year political story. I don't have one. I have eyes. I have a mouth. I showed up.
God help Toronto.
I studied business and marketing. Then I left and did comedy, because I liked talking to people more than I liked the office.
A mayor has to walk into a room full of strangers and make them listen. I have been doing that for years. The room got bigger. The job is the same.
Platform
You should be able to walk your own city without rolling the dice. Your kid. Your mother. You, at 11pm, going home.
Wanting that should not be a fight. Apparently it is. So we are going to talk about it like adults who live here.
The TTC. The education boards. The clinics. These things exist because we pay for them.
If we are paying, we get to ask what we got. And somebody with a name has to answer. Not a slogan. An answer.
That is what people say when they are meeting you. That is the map in their head. That is the corner. You can hang a new sign. You did not change the city. You just made everybody lie a little every time they try to find each other.
Also it's Yonge and Dundas. You know what I'm talking about.
Axe the tax. Cut the spending. Look at the books like they belong to us, because they do.
Every time somebody says the city has no money, I want to know where the other money went. I want results. I do not want a standing ovation for a receipt.
Build the houses. People need a door that closes. A key. A place that is theirs.
We are in a housing crisis. Spreadsheets do not sleep on the street. Sometimes the city has to build shit because people need the shit. Build the homes.
I was a comedian. People told me to run. I listened.
I am going to say what I think. I am going to make jokes. I am going to piss people off. I am going to listen when I am wrong. And I am going to fight for this city because I live in it.
